17-4 Corrosion resistance of Stainless Steel Plate
17-4 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance compared to hardenable chromium grades of 400 series stainless steel such as type 410 stainless steel. It is nearly comparable to chromium-nickel grades of 300 series stainless steel such as Type 304 stainless steel. 17-4 Corrosion resistance is affected by surface finish and precipitation hardening heat treatment.

17-4 Manufacture of Stainless Steel Plate
This grade is readily forged, hot rolled, or upset in the temperature range between 2050°F and 2200°F and not lower than 1850°F. Solution treatment is usually followed by hot working followed by precipitation hardening.

17-4 Machinability of Stainless Steel Plate
This material processes well in the solution treated (annealed) condition, with approximately 50% improvement in processability at Cond H1150.

17-4 Weldability of Stainless Steel Plate
It is easily welded by commercial processes without preheating or postheating, usually done to 400 series stainless steel grades.

17-4 Application of Stainless Steel Plate
17-4 stainless steel is suitable for a variety of applications in the commercial, oil and gas, aerospace and nuclear industries. It is suitable for complex parts requiring corrosion resistance and high strength, and due to its precipitation hardening ability, it can be heat treated and welded with minimal deformation.
